Job Description
The Trottier Space Institute and Department of Physics at McGill University invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar position, under the direction of Dr. Daryl Haggard at McGill University and Dr. John Ruan at Bishop’s University. The researcher will be based at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec (Canada), and will undertake research broadly on sources of gravitational waves that may be detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).
The researcher will work on a variety of topics related to milli-Hz gravitational waves, including but not limited to: (1) investigating the host galaxies of massive black hole binaries, (2) observations probing the nature of quasi-periodic eruptions, and/or (3) machine-learning accelerated modelling of LISA data.
The position start date is between August and December 2024, but negotiable. The appointment will be for an initial period of two years, renewable for a third year subject to performance and availability of funds.
A Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in astronomy, physics, or closely related field is required. The degree must be in hand at the time of initial appointment. Applicants with a background in telescope observations, numerical simulations, or gravitational wave analysis are all strongly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants within 3 years of their PhD.
The Trottier Space Institute at McGill (TSI) is an interdisciplinary centre that brings together researchers engaged in space-related research. Currently there are 20 active faculty members affiliated with TSI, from the departments of Physics, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, and Natural Resource Sciences. Research areas include astrophysics, cosmology, astrobiology, geophysics, life in extreme environments, and the search for extraterrestrial biosignatures.
The project team leadership is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all team members. We strongly encourage researchers from underrepresented groups in physics and astronomy to apply.
Please direct inquiries to Daryl Haggard ([email protected]) and John Ruan ([email protected]).
Compensation and Benefits
This full-time position offers a salary of $65,000 CAD per year, a relocation allowance, and a research fund (for travel, page charges, equipment, etc.). Postdoctoral researchers at McGill are unionized, and enjoy a comprehensive benefits package described here.
